Our mission is to promote human virology in Latin America and to prevent viral infections in humans, including HIV/AIDS. To achieve these goals we plan to:
1) increase collaboration among clinicians and scientists between IHV and UAG
2) foster research training and career development for young Mexicans investigators, especially in HIV/AIDS.
3) promote dissemination of current knowledge among investigators, caregivers, and the public in general.
Our Symposium of Human Virology and AIDS will address all three of the above mentioned aims. The symposium will take place March 7-8 2007, in Guadalajara, Mexico. The decision to host the meeting at the UAG, Mexico, signifies the beginning of the potential building of the Institute of Human Virology Guadalajara. The symposium will cover a broad range of topics including the epidemiology and clinical features of viral infections, especially HIV; tropism and pathogenesis of viruses, including HIV; prevention and therapy with particular emphasis on HIV/AIDS. The meeting will feature outstanding AIDS speakers in the fields of virology, immunology, clinical infectology, and epidemiology. The main focus of this meeting is to discuss the emerging new epidemic developing in Mexico of HIV-1 resistant viruses and potential “new” epidemic of HIV-1 into USA.
The new Latin American Program at the Institute of Human Virology is intended to expand current knowledge on HIV/AIDS and to serve as a bridge to the rest of the Americas by fostering scientific collaboration and partnerships in HIV/AIDS research across these countries. It is our firm commitment to enhance the training and participation of Hispanic physicians and investigators in this staggering public health issue so that the pandemic can be brought under total control. We are grateful to the members of the local organizing committee for their hospitality and important contributions to the symposium.
We extend our thanks to the Medical researchers who have agreed to participate in the Symposium on HIV/AIDS in the Americas: Viral Resistance, Vaccines and New Treatments In AIDS and who have collaborated on the Symposium’s organization.
We also extend our appreciation to our cosponsors: these include the Latin American Program of the IHV at the University of Maryland, the Medical School of UAG and the Pan-American Society for Neurovirology for their assistance. We express great gratitude to our major supporter of this meeting, the Landsteiner Scientific, Mexico.
